The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, says it fully supports the call by the Honourable Minister of Power, Chief Joseph Tegbe, for greater harmony in the Nigerian Electricity Market. NERC stated this in a press statement issued on the 19th of July 2026.

The Minister made the call at a workshop held in Abuja on the 14th of July 2026. The theme of the workshop was ‘Legal, Policy and Regulatory Harmonisation between Federal and State Institutions on the Decentralisation of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry’. According to the Minister, harmonising regulatory and operational activities will help increase access to electricity for Nigerians.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of NERC, Dr. Musiliu Oseni, also called for unity in the emerging multi-tier electricity market. Dr. Oseni said Nigerians are less concerned about which tier of government regulates the sector and are more focused on having reliable and uninterrupted power supply.

The NERC Chairman urged all stakeholders in the power sector to drop personal interests and embrace dialogue. He said, “Nigerians do not care who regulates what, but who actually meets their supply needs.” He stressed that collaboration between federal and state actors is critical to meeting the yearnings of electricity consumers.

Dr. Oseni recommended the creation of more frequent and focused policy meetings with state commissioners. He suggested reforming the National Council on Power, NACOP, to hold regular touchpoints instead of the large annual gathering. He said this will improve coordination, especially during the current transition phase under the Electricity Act.

NERC concluded that electricity remains the bedrock for national development. The Commission says it remains committed to working with the Ministry of Power, state governments and other players to ensure a harmonised, efficient and consumer-focused electricity market in Nigeria.
