The Nigeria Independent System Operator, NISO, has concluded a public hearing with electricity distribution companies over unpaid market bills.

‎The hearing ran from Tuesday, 1 September to Friday, 4 September 2026. It focused on outstanding debts owed by the DisCos to the Nigerian Electricity Market and to service providers.

‎NISO said the debts continue to affect the smooth running and growth of the electricity market.

‎A five-member committee led by the Executive Director for Market Operations, Engineer Dr Edmund Eje, reviewed payment proposals submitted by some of the DisCos. The committee said the proposals were not acceptable, given the size and age of the debts.

‎NISO noted that the Federal Government had already cancelled about 97 per cent of DisCos’ debts for the period between 2015 and 2020. The committee therefore urged the affected DisCos to urgently pay the remaining balances.

NISO said it will now take the next steps, including applying sanctions under the Market Rules. It added that it remains committed to dialogue, transparency and due process.

The operator said the engagement highlights the need for discipline, compliance and accountability in the power sector, and for continued collaboration to build confidence and ensure a stable electricity market.
