ABUJA- The Nigerian Independent System Operator, NISO, has started the second phase of training for its system operators to improve safety and reliability on the national power grid.

‎Speaking at the opening, NISO Managing Director, Engineer Abdu Bello Mohammed, said regular training is needed to help operators manage the growing complexities of the power system.

‎He said NISO, as an independent operator, must run the grid with competence, discipline and teamwork. He added that the training will promote professionalism, integrity and safety across all control centers.

Mohammed urged participants to study the Grid Code, which guides how operators manage the system. He said NISO will keep investing in its staff because new technology only works with well-trained people.

Also speaking, Executive Director for System Operations, Engineer Nafisatu Ali, said system operators are responsible for monitoring the grid in real time, balancing power supply and demand, and responding to emergencies.

She said operators must improve their skills in voltage control, outage management and coordination between control rooms. She urged them to learn from past grid disturbances to prevent future problems.

Executive Director for Finance and Corporate Services, Babajide Ibironke, said participants must share what they learn with their teams.

NISO said the program is part of efforts to build the skills needed to manage Nigeria’s evolving electricity system and deliver more stable power to consumers.
