The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has dismissed as inaccurate a publication by the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) concerning an outage at the Lekki Transmission Substation, clarifying that its transformer did not trip unexpectedly as claimed.

‎In a statement issued on Thursday, TCN said the incident occurred at 4:34 a.m. on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, when EKEDC’s Oniru and Agungi 33kV feeders tripped simultaneously due to overcurrent and an earth fault.

‎According to TCN, the fault subsequently caused the inter-tripping of the primary and secondary breakers of its TR1 60MVA, 132/33kV transformer, accompanied by a loud bang and smoke at the substation.

The transmission company said its maintenance crew responded promptly, rehabilitated the damaged secondary breaker and restored both the primary and secondary breakers later the same day.

TCN, however, explained that another trip occurred when EKEDC attempted to close its Oniru feeder on trial, as the same relay indications persisted, requiring additional corrective work.

‎The company stressed that there was no outage originating from its T11 transformer, contrary to EKEDC’s publication, and maintained that the incident was strictly related to the distribution company’s Oniru and Agungi 33kV feeders.

‎TCN said its technical team remained on site and was working to restore electricity supply to affected customers as quickly as possible. It expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the incident.

The transmission company reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the national grid and developing a more robust transmission network, while assuring affected electricity consumers that efforts were ongoing to resolve the fault.
