The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has attributed the current decline in electricity generation on the national grid to constraints in gas supply to thermal power plants and reduced output from hydroelectric power stations.
In a statement issued on November 5, 2026, the System Operator explained that limited gas availability had constrained the capacity of affected thermal generating stations to operate at their available levels, while reduced water inflows into reservoirs had affected the generation capacity of hydroelectric stations.
NISO said the combined effect of these challenges had reduced available electricity generation, consequently affecting the volume of power allocated to Distribution Companies (DisCos) for onward supply to consumers.
The development, it noted, had resulted in fewer hours of electricity supply and increased load shedding across distribution networks, with the extent of the impact varying according to available generation and the corresponding allocations to individual DisCos.
The System Operator acknowledged the impact of the current generation shortfall on electricity consumers nationwide, expressing appreciation for the concerns raised by members of the public and other stakeholders over the situation.
It stated that efforts were ongoing to diversify the country’s energy mix to strengthen electricity supply security, while maintaining its commitment to ensuring the stability of the national grid.
NISO further assured Nigerians that it would continue to optimise the dispatch of available electricity generation and ensure the secure, reliable and efficient operation of the national grid despite prevailing operational constraints.
The clarification comes amid concerns over reduced electricity supply across the country, with the System Operator identifying gas supply limitations and reduced hydropower output as the major factors responsible for the current generation shortfall.
