The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening its partnership with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as it honoured the Fund’s outgoing Resident Representative in Nigeria, Dr. Christian Ebeke, at a farewell dinner in Abuja. The event celebrated Dr. Ebeke’s contributions to Nigeria’s economic reform programme during his three-year assignment.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, described Dr. Ebeke as a trusted partner whose professionalism, technical expertise and constructive engagement strengthened cooperation between Nigeria and the IMF during a critical period of economic reforms. He said the IMF official provided valuable technical support while demonstrating a clear understanding of Nigeria’s economic realities.

Oyedele noted that Dr. Ebeke played an important role in policy discussions on fiscal reforms, domestic revenue mobilisation, public debt management and foreign exchange reforms. He added that the outgoing Resident Representative’s commitment to dialogue, mutual respect and collaborative problem-solving further reinforced the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and the IMF.

In addition, Director of the International Economic Relations Department, Stanley George, said Dr. Ebeke’s tenure would be remembered for its professionalism and steadfast support for Nigeria’s reform agenda. Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Mr. Yemi Cardoso, said the IMF official served during a defining period of the country’s economic transition and commended his role in promoting constructive dialogue, technical cooperation and policy credibility. He expressed confidence that the strong collaboration between Nigeria and the IMF would continue under Dr. Ebeke’s successor.

In responding to the tributes, Dr. Ebeke described his assignment in Nigeria as a privilege and a professionally rewarding experience. He said his role allowed him to engage with government institutions, development partners, the private sector, academia and other stakeholders committed to Nigeria’s economic development, adding that he would always cherish the experience.

Dr. Ebeke expressed admiration for the resilience, talent and entrepreneurial spirit of Nigerians, saying the country is well positioned to achieve inclusive and sustainable economic growth through continued reforms, sound economic policies and collaboration among stakeholders.
