The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted components of more than 140 pump-action rifles and seized cannabis-infused products valued at ₦373.8 million at the Tincan Island Port Command in Lagos.

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, disclosed this on Thursday, August 6, 2026, while briefing journalists on the seizures at the port. He said the arms components were discovered in a container that arrived aboard MV VELIKA on July 8, 2026, after it was flagged for enhanced monitoring through the Service’s intelligence-driven risk management system.

‎According to Adeniyi, a physical examination of the container uncovered concealed crates containing knocked-down components preliminarily identified as JoJeff pump-action rifles. He said two suspects had been arrested in connection with the seizure, while a principal suspect remains at large and is being tracked.

‎In a separate operation, Customs officers intercepted two 40-foot containers carrying cannabis-infused products concealed among used vehicles, generators, batteries and other imported goods.

‎The seized items included 109 cartons of Delta-8 cannabis-infused pre-roll cookies, 125 cartons of Delta-8 cannabis-infused gummies and 73 cartons of cannabis-infused cookies. The products were estimated to have a combined street value of ₦373,802,640.

Adeniyi said the seizures demonstrated the growing sophistication of transnational criminal networks using legitimate trade channels to smuggle prohibited weapons and narcotics into Nigeria. He attributed the successful interceptions to the Service’s intelligence-led enforcement strategy, risk-profiling systems and collaboration with other security agencies.

‎The Customs boss also warned that criminal groups could attempt to exploit Nigeria’s borders, ports and airports during the election season to move prohibited items into the country. He assured Nigerians that the Service would intensify surveillance and enforcement operations to prevent such activities.

‎Adeniyi further warned against internal compromise within the Service, saying Customs would not tolerate officers who assist smugglers or facilitate the importation of items capable of threatening national security. He urged members of the public to provide credible information to security agencies and commended officers of the Tincan Island Port Command and Customs Enforcement Unit for their vigilance.
