TCN COMMISSIONS UPGRADED APAPA ROAD 132/33KV SUBSTATION TO BOOST POWER SUPPLY IN LAGOS

LAGOS – The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, has formally commissioned the upgraded Apapa Road 132/33kV Transmission Substation in Lagos, describing it as a major milestone in the strengthening of Nigeria’s power infrastructure. The event held on August 17, 2026.

Speaking at the commissioning, TCN Managing Director, Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, said the project was delivered in partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency, JICA, and aligns with the power sector goals of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. He noted the upgrade targets one of Lagos’ busiest industrial corridors.

Engr. Abdulaziz announced that the substation’s capacity has been tripled from 60MVA to 180MVA with the installation of two new 60MVA power transformers and modern Gas Insulated Switchgear, GIS. He said this will significantly increase bulk power available to Eko Electricity Distribution Company, EKEDC.

He added that the upgrade will ensure more reliable supply, improve quality of electricity and boost economic productivity in Lagos and the nation.

The project was executed by Takaoka Engineering Co. Ltd. under the Emergency Rehabilitation and Reinforcement of Lagos Transmission Substations programme.

The Grant Agreement between the Federal Government and JICA was signed on November 23, 2018, with implementation starting in 2019. The system was energised on April 17, 2026.Engr. Abdulaziz acknowledged the support of the Federal Government, the Honourable Minister of Power, Mr. Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, and the Lagos State Government for creating an enabling environment.

He also commended JICA, the Federal Ministry of Finance, TCN engineers, contractors and other stakeholders for delivering the project.

He said the achievement underscores TCN’s commitment to modernising the transmission network, reducing technical losses and stabilising the national grid to support economic growth.

He used the occasion to appeal for similar grant support to other critical sections of the transmission network to sustain and optimise operations nationwide.

Dignitaries at the event included representatives of the Federal Ministry of Power, NERC, Eko Disco, development partners, traditional rulers and community leaders.

Engr. Abdulaziz concluded that the commissioning represents progress, partnership and a brighter energy future for Lagos and Nigeria.
