TCN COMMISSIONS 2X100MVA TRANSFORMERS AT IJORA SUBSTATION TO BOOST LAGOS POWER SUPPLY

LAGOS – The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, has commissioned two new 100MVA, 132/33kV power transformers at the Ijora Transmission Substation in Lagos. The event was held on Sunday, August 17, 2026 and was performed by the Honourable Minister of Power.

Addressing guests, TCN Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Sule A. Abdulaziz, said the commissioning is a demonstration of the Federal Government’s deliberate investment in critical electricity infrastructure. He noted that TCN remains committed to building a transmission network that can support Nigeria’s growing energy demand.

‎Engr. Abdulaziz stated that electricity remains the bedrock of economic growth for industries, businesses, schools, hospitals and households. He said TCN continues to rehabilitate and expand substations and transmission lines to efficiently wheel bulk electricity from generation companies to distribution load centres across the country.

‎He explained that two ageing 30MVA transformers were replaced with two modern 100MVA transformers at Ijora. This increases the substation’s installed capacity from 90MVA to 230MVA, adding 140MVA to support the growing electricity demand within the Eko Electricity Distribution Company franchise area.

According to the TCN boss, the upgrade will deliver more bulk power to Eko Disco load centres, accommodate future load growth, reduce network constraints and improve reliability of supply. He said Ijora is vital to the commercial and industrial life of Lagos State and the new capacity will strengthen supply to that corridor.

‎Engr. Abdulaziz said the project is part of TCN’s nationwide programme to expand transmission infrastructure and ensure every megawatt generated is evacuated efficiently. He added that transmission capacity must stay ahead of generation, which is why TCN will continue investing in substations, transformers, transmission lines and advanced grid technologies.

The project was funded by the World Bank and executed by Messrs Shanghai Electric Limited. The TCN MD appreciated the support of the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, and the leadership of the Honourable Minister of Power, Mr. Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, for driving critical transmission projects nationwide.

‎He also acknowledged the contributions of development partners, contractors, host communities, security agencies and TCN staff. Engr. Abdulaziz said while this milestone is significant, TCN will continue pursuing strategic investments to expand capacity, improve grid resilience and support Nigeria’s industrialisation and sustainable development goals.
