.IKEJA – The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, has commissioned a new 1 by 100MVA, 132 by 33kV power transformer at the Alausa Transmission Substation in Lagos.
The commissioning was done on Monday, August 18, 2026, by the Managing Director and Chief Executive of TCN, Engineer Sule Abdulaziz. He said the event reflects the collective resolve to secure a stable and reliable power future for Nigeria.
According to TCN, the new transformer replaces the substation’s old 1 by 30MVA unit. The upgrade increases the substation’s capacity by 70MVA, raising total capacity from 135MVA to 205MVA to meet growing load demand in the area.
The project was executed by Messrs Shanghai Electric Ltd under a World Bank-funded initiative that began in January 2021. TCN said the completion shows its commitment to delivering critical infrastructure despite implementation challenges.
TCN estimates that with energisation, the transformer will deliver more stable and reliable power to at least 70,000 residents in Alausa and environs through the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company.
Beyond Lagos, the Managing Director said the upgrade increases the quantum of bulk power TCN can wheel to distribution load centers nationwide. He noted that it will reinforce grid stability and ensure more power gets to consumers within franchise areas.
Engineer Abdulaziz linked the project to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He also acknowledged the guidance of the Honourable Minister of Power in driving steady progress in the sector.
In his closing remarks, the TCN boss expressed appreciation to the President, the Minister of Power, the World Bank, Lagos State Government, contractors, engineers, and all stakeholders. He said their support made the milestone possible.
