TCN COMMISSIONS 100MVA TRANSFORMER TO BOOST POWER SUPPLY IN ALAUSA, ENVIRONS

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commissioned a new 1x100MVA, 132/33kV power transformer at its Alausa Transmission Substation in Lagos, in a move expected to strengthen electricity supply and improve grid capacity in the area.

The TCN Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, said the project was part of efforts by the Federal Government and the company to expand and strengthen Nigeria’s transmission infrastructure.

According to him, the new transformer replaces the substation’s existing 1x30MVA, 132/33kV transformer, increasing its capacity by 70MVA. The upgrade also raises the total capacity of the Alausa substation from 135MVA to 205MVA, improving its ability to meet growing electricity demand.

Abdulaziz said the project was executed by Shanghai Electric Limited under a World Bank-funded initiative that commenced in January 2021. He noted that, upon energisation, the transformer would provide more stable and reliable electricity to at least 70,000 residents in Alausa and surrounding communities through the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company.

‎The TCN boss said the project would also increase the volume of bulk electricity the company can wheel to distribution load centres, thereby strengthening grid stability and improving the delivery of power to electricity distribution companies for onward supply to consumers.

‎He said the commissioning demonstrated TCN’s commitment to building and sustaining a robust transmission network capable of supporting Nigeria’s growing electricity needs and ensuring efficient transportation of bulk power to distribution load centres across the country.

Abdulaziz said the project aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and acknowledged the support and guidance of the Minister of Power in driving progress in the power sector. He also expressed appreciation to the World Bank, Lagos State Government, contractors, engineers and other stakeholders involved in the project.

The TCN managing director said the company remained committed to strengthening Nigeria’s transmission infrastructure and ensuring that available bulk power was efficiently delivered to distribution networks. He described the Alausa transformer commissioning as another milestone in efforts to build a more stable and reliable electricity supply system.
