FG COMMISSIONS UPGRADED LEKKI, ALAUSA SUBSTATIONS, ADDS 272MW TO GRID IN LAGOS

The Federal Government has commissioned upgraded transmission infrastructure at Alausa and Lekki in Lagos, adding a combined 272 megawatts of bulk power capacity to two of the state’s key economic corridors.

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, performed the commissioning on Tuesday as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s transmission network. He said the projects are aimed at removing bottlenecks that have limited power supply and economic growth.

‎At Alausa, an existing 30MVA transformer was replaced with a new 100MVA unit. This lifted the station’s capacity from 135MVA to 205MVA and increased bulk power available to Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company by 80 megawatts.

At Lekki, the Transmission Company of Nigeria installed two additional 60MVA, 132/33kV power transformers and nine new 33kV feeders. This doubled the substation’s capacity from 120MVA to 240MVA, adding about 192 megawatts. A further 300MVA, 330/132kV transformer is expected to be energised in November 2026.

TCN Managing Director and CEO, Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, said the Alausa upgrade, executed by Shanghai Electric under World Bank funding, will provide more stable electricity to at least 70,000 residents through IKEDC. He added that it will also improve grid stability and bulk power delivery to distribution companies nationwide.

Minister Tegbe described the upgrades as proof of President Bola Tinubu’s determination to confront infrastructure constraints. He said the administration’s approach is to identify bottlenecks, invest in them, and unlock capacity across the power sector.

‎Tegbe commended TCN, NISO, EKEDC, IKEDC, Shanghai Electric Group and the World Bank for delivering the projects. He also lauded Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for sustaining an enabling environment for infrastructure investment in the state.
