FG COMMISSIONS TRANSFORMER PROJECTS TO BOOST POWER TRANSMISSION CAPACITY IN LAGOS

The Federal Government has commissioned transformer projects across four transmission substations in Lagos State, adding 840MVA of transformer capacity to the transmission network and increasing bulk power availability to electricity distribution companies in the state.

‎The projects, commissioned on Monday, August 17, and Tuesday, August 18, 2026, were inaugurated by the Minister of Power, Engr. Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, at the Apapa, Ijora, Lekki and Alausa transmission substations. The interventions include two 60MVA transformers at Apapa, two 100MVA transformers at Ijora, a 300MVA transformer and two 60MVA transformers at Lekki, and a 100MVA transformer at Alausa.

At the Lekki Transmission Substation, the project increased transformer capacity at the 330/132kV level from 300MVA to 600MVA, while capacity at the 132/33kV level rose from 120MVA to 240MVA. The intervention also delivered nine new 33kV feeders to improve bulk power delivery to the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) network.

At the Alausa Transmission Substation, the newly commissioned 100MVA, 132/33kV transformer increased the substation’s total transformation capacity from 135MVA to 205MVA. According to the ministry, the project also increased bulk power available to Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) by 80MW for onward distribution to consumers within its franchise area.

The Minister described the projects as targeted investments aimed at strengthening electricity infrastructure in strategic economic corridors. He said the additional capacity would support businesses, industries and communities while helping to ensure that electricity infrastructure does not constrain economic growth in rapidly developing areas such as Lekki.

At Apapa, the Federal Government commissioned a 2x60MVA Gas Insulated Switchgear substation delivered by the Japan International Cooperation Agency under its Official Development Assistance programme. The facility includes modern protection and control systems, substation automation and SCADA infrastructure, and is expected to increase bulk power availability in the area by about 96MW.

The Ijora project involved replacing two existing 30MVA transformers with two 100MVA, 132/33kV transformers. The upgrade increased the substation’s installed capacity from 90MVA to 230MVA and added 112MW of transmission capacity to improve electricity supply to Ijora, Costain, Oyingbo, Customs and adjoining communities within the EKEDC franchise.

‎The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, said the projects would significantly improve power transmission and support economic activities across Lagos. He said the upgrades would strengthen grid stability, reduce transmission constraints and improve electricity delivery, while appealing for additional grant support to sustain critical transmission projects nationwide.
