DATAPRO SAYS AFCRA’S CREDIBILITY WILL DEPEND ON ANALYTICAL CONSISTENCY

Credit Rating Agency, DataPro Limited, says the long-term credibility and market acceptance of the proposed African Credit Rating Agency, AfCRA, will depend on its ability to demonstrate sustained analytical consistency and predictive value, rather than relying only on institutional aspirations or market expectations.

‎In its latest assessment of the emerging African credit rating landscape, DataPro stressed that credibility in the ratings industry cannot be established through regulatory or institutional mandate alone. According to the firm, it must be earned over time through analytical excellence and demonstrable performance.

The agency noted that investors and other capital market participants are likely to judge AfCRA primarily by the quality, consistency and reliability of its credit assessments. It added that these factors will shape how the market views the new agency.

DataPro stated that a proven record of analytical consistency and predictive accuracy will carry more weight in building market confidence than institutional goals or expectations. The firm emphasized that ratings must provide real insight to be trusted.

The ratings firm said confidence in any credit rating agency cannot simply be conferred through a mandate. It must be built progressively through the agency’s ability to provide credible and independent assessments of credit risk.

‎“For AfCRA, long-term market acceptance will depend on its ability to consistently demonstrate the qualities that define every credible Credit Rating Agency: independence, methodological transparency, analytical rigour, sound governance and ratings that provide meaningful insights into relative credit risk,” DataPro stated.

DataPro explained that these attributes will be critical in determining whether market participants ultimately regard AfCRA’s ratings as credible tools for investment and risk assessment. The agency said independence will be particularly significant given how ratings influence investment decisions, borrowing costs and access to capital.

The firm further noted that methodological transparency will also be essential. It said investors will need to clearly understand the principles, assumptions and analytical processes underpinning AfCRA’s ratings before they can rely on them for decision-making.
