FEDERAL GOVERNMENT MULLS TOUGHER SUSTAINABILITY RULES FOR COMPANIES
The Federal Government has signalled plans to place tougher sustainability expectations on private companies as Nigeria steps up efforts to meet climate and environmental targets.
This indication came during the launch of the Nigerian Corporate Sustainability Report by Norrenberger in Abuja, where government officials and industry leaders called for stronger environmental, social and governance standards across Nigerian businesses.
Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Finance and Stakeholder Engagement, Ibrahim Sheleng, said Nigeria had already committed itself to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent unconditionally and would need stronger participation from the private sector to achieve the target.
Sheleng explained that the newly launched sustainability report supports Nigeria’s obligations under the Paris Agreement and the United Nations climate framework.
According to him, the sustainability framework introduced through the report gives companies clearer direction on what the government expects regarding Environmental, Social and Governance obligations and reporting standards.
