The Federal Government has commissioned a 1x100MVA, 132/33kV power transformer at the Alausa Transmission Substation in Lagos State, increasing the facility’s total capacity from 135MVA to 205MVA.
The Minister of Power, Mr. Joseph Tegbe, who commissioned the transformer on Tuesday, said the project was part of the administration’s efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s electricity transmission infrastructure and address capacity constraints affecting power supply.
Tegbe said the Alausa substation serves one of Lagos State’s major administrative and economic corridors, with government institutions, businesses, industries, markets and residential communities relying on its electricity infrastructure.
According to him, the substation originally had one 60MVA, one 45MVA and one 30MVA transformer, giving it a combined installed capacity of 135MVA, equivalent to approximately 108MW.
He said the replacement of the existing 30MVA transformer with the new 100MVA unit increased the substation’s total wheeling and load capacity to 205MVA, equivalent to about 164MW, while increasing the bulk power available to Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) by 80MW.
The minister said the additional capacity would benefit businesses, industries, hospitals, schools, offices, markets and households within IKEDC’s franchise area, while supporting economic activities and improving electricity availability in the area.
Tegbe said the Federal Government’s strategy was to identify transmission bottlenecks, invest in critical infrastructure, expand substation capacity and replace ageing equipment to improve the reliability and efficiency of electricity supply nationwide. He commended the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), IKEDC and Shanghai Electric Group Company Limited for their contributions to the project.
The minister also commended the Lagos State Government for its partnership in supporting infrastructure development and assured Nigerians that the Tinubu administration would continue to invest in critical transmission infrastructure and support investment across the electricity value chain. He subsequently formally commissioned the transformer and its associated facilities on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
