HOUSE OF REPS CONDEMN OFFICERS OF 177 BATTALION FOR TAKING OVER RESPONSIBILITIES OF NIGERIAN POLICE

The House of Representatives has Condemned the attempt by the officers of 177 battalion to take over the work of the Nigerian Police and the courts in resolving disputes between citizens. 

It also resolved to invite the Chief of Defense Staff, Chief of Army Staff and the Commanding Officer of 177 battalion to cause an appearance before the House Committees on Army, Human Rights and Justice to explain why officers under their command violated the relevant provisions of the Nigerian Constitution.

This was the resolution of a motion under matters of urgent national importance moved by Rep. Mansur Soro from Bauchi state on the need to preserve public order and to intervene in the unlawful arrest and detention of some Nigerians at plenary.

Ruling on the motion, speaker Abbas Tajuddeen however urged the Chief of Defense Staff and the Chief of Army Staff to order the immediate release of these individuals from unlawful detention and to also apologize to them for infringing on their fundamental human rights.
