MINISTER OF BUDGET AND ECONOMIC PLANNING URGES LOCAL GOVERNMENTS TO DRIVE GRASSROOTS DEVELOPMENT
The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Bagudu, has called on local governments across Nigeria to take the lead in promoting inclusive development and strengthening social protection at the grassroots.
He made the call in Abuja during a stakeholder engagement with local government chairmen organised by the National Social Safety Nets Coordinating Office, NASSCO.
Speaking on the theme, “Strengthening Local Government Leadership for Inclusive Development and Social Protection Delivery,” Bagudu said public officials have a constitutional and moral responsibility to improve the welfare of Nigerians.
The minister also stressed that effective social protection requires cooperation among the federal, state, and local governments, as well as development partners, civil society groups, and community stakeholders. According to him, stronger coordination will reduce duplication, close service gaps, and improve development outcomes across the country.
Bagudu further urged local government chairmen to take ownership of development programmes in their areas and work with state and federal authorities to unlock economic potential and improve living conditions for Nigerians.
