NADDC LAMENTS NIGERIA SPENDS 19 MILLION NAIRA ANNUALLY ON IMPORTED SPARE PARTS OF MOTORCYCLE
The Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council, NADDC,Mr.Oluwemimo Osanipin has highlighted the achievements of the council in repositioning the automotive industry.
Speaking at a meeting with Commerce and Industry Correspondent Association of Nigeria,CICAN, the DG noted that the industry has lapses, particularly in the area of component parts. He emphasized the need for local policy production to have a positive impact on the Nigerian economy.
Mr.Osanipin explained that NADDC is also focusing on capacity building, with over 1,000 technicians trained so far on CNG value chain .
The council has developed a curriculum for compressed natural gas, CNG, training and has accredited workshops to international standards. Additionally, 21 technical centers are being equipped to support the growth of the automotive industry
According to the DG, Nigeria spends around $19 million annually on spare parts for motorcycles alone and NADDC is working to address limited local content in motorcycles parts and its collaborating with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, UNIDO, to develop the Nnewi auto industrial park. The goal is to increase local component vehicle production and reduce reliance on imported parts.
