The Commissioner for Insurance, Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, has charged the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria, CIIN, to deepen professionalism, ethical conduct, and innovation amid ongoing industry reforms. He gave the charge today at the investiture ceremony of Mr. Akinjide Orimolade as the 53rd President and Chairman of Council of CIIN.

Mr. Omosehin described the event as “a call to stewardship at a defining moment,” noting that the industry’s future will depend on quality leadership, competence, and discipline in serving the public interest. He commended the outgoing President, Mrs. Yetunde Olubunmi Ilori, for her visionary leadership which strengthened CIIN’s position, and expressed confidence in Mr. Orimolade’s capacity to lead the Institute forward.

The Commissioner urged the new CIIN Council to focus on three priorities. First, raise standards of practice and continuous professional development. Second, build the talent pipeline through mentorship and engagement with young professionals and tertiary institutions. Third, champion innovation and public trust by equipping practitioners with skills for digital transformation, data-driven underwriting, cybersecurity, and inclusive distribution.

Highlighting the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act, 2025, the NAICOM boss said the Commission’s agenda is focused on market conduct, policyholder protection, governance, and financial inclusion. He stressed that the ongoing recapitalisation exercise is central to building a resilient market, with 14 days left to the July 31, 2026 deadline. He urged operators to treat the deadline with urgency.

NAICOM called on CIIN to translate regulatory expectations into professional capacity through CPD, compliance education, and board training. The Commission also urged the Institute to strengthen ethical and market conduct standards, including fair treatment of policyholders and prompt claims settlement, while identifying compliance gaps to support industry readiness.

The Commissioner said a vibrant and trusted Nigerian insurance industry requires stronger capital, better conduct, responsible innovation, and professionals who understand that “insurance is first a promise to the public.” He assured CIIN of NAICOM’s continued partnership and regulatory support.
