PRESIDENT TINUBU ORDERS SECURITY CHIEFS TO BENUE TO BRING LASTING PEACE

President Bola Tinubu has taken decisive action to address the escalating crisis in Benue State, where recent attacks have claimed numerous lives. The President has directed security chiefs to implement his earlier directive aimed at bringing lasting peace and security to the state.

According to a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, intelligence chiefs, police, and military personnel have been deployed to Benue to direct security operations and restore order.

This move comes after a fresh wave of reprisal attacks led to significant loss of life, with reports indicating over 200 people killed.

President Tinubu has also tasked Governor Hyacinth Alia with convening reconciliation meetings and dialogue among the warring parties to end the bloodshed and promote peaceful coexistence between farmers, herders, and local communities. The President described the killings as “inhuman and anti-progress” and urged political and community leaders to refrain from inflammatory statements that could exacerbate tensions.

The President’s directive emphasizes the need for decisive action against perpetrators of violence, stating, “Enough is now enough.” He has instructed security agencies to arrest and prosecute those responsible for the attacks, regardless of their affiliation. Governor Alia is expected to lead the reconciliation process, working with leaders across divides to address differences with fairness, openness, and justice.

The situation in Benue remains volatile, with thousands of people displaced and many more affected by the violence. The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, is expected to visit Benue State to assess the situation and work with local authorities to restore peace.
