The House of Representatives Committee on Public Assets has threatened to demolish illegal structures built on federal rights of way for power projects executed by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company.
The committee said encroachment and vandalism are undermining power sector investments.
Chairman of the committee, Rep. Ademorin Kuye, issued the threat after inspecting the 132kV New Haven-Ninth Mile-Nsukka transmission line in Enugu State and the Egbu 330/132/33kV substation in Owerri, Imo State.
Kuye said churches, hotels, private houses and state government buildings were erected on designated transmission routes, delaying project completion.
He said the Owerri substation is about 85 percent complete and will add about 250 megawatts to electricity supply in Imo State, especially Orlu area. He said the project was first awarded in 2006 and has received renewed push under NDPHC Managing Director Jennifer Adighije.
The chairman said it was disappointing that state authorities approved buildings on federal rights of way despite huge federal investment to improve power supply and industrial growth.
He warned that illegal occupation of government land will no longer be tolerated and drastic steps will be taken to remove the structures.
He urged federal and state governments to collaborate to protect public assets, pay contractors on time and compensate landowners promptly to avoid disputes.
He commended NDPHC for the quality of work at Owerri and said completion expected around March 2027 will boost industrial activities in the South-East.
