RWANDA RECEIVES FIRST GROUP OF MIGRANTS UNDER US DEPORTATION DEAL
Rwanda has received its first group of seven migrants from the United States as part of a deportation agreement, with three individuals expressing a desire to return to their home countries and four wishing to stay in Rwanda.
According to media reports, the Rwandan government confirmed it will vet all proposed migrants for resettlement and has agreed to accept up to 250 individuals from the US.
The arrivals are being accommodated by an international organization and supported by Rwandan social services.
This arrangement follows a previously scrapped deal with Britain and is part of the US administration’s broader strategy of deporting individuals to third countries, a practice that rights experts have warned could violate international law due to potential risks of abuse.
Rwanda’s government cited its own history of displacement as a rationale for the agreement.
