STAKEHOLDERS IN AGRICULTURAL SECTOR CALLS FOR REJECTION OF GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS IN NIGERIA
Still from the Reps, Stakeholders and farmers in the Agricultural sector have unanimously appealed to the Nigerian government to reject the Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in the country.
The coalition who made the appeal during a press briefing after making their position known before the joint committee’s public hearing at the House of Representatives, maintained that the GMOs are dangerous to human health.
A South African expert on GMO, Mr. Rutendo Matinyarare, said that south Africa was one of the first countries in Africa to accept GMO and the result has not been palatable, adding that GMO affects human immune system
However, in his remarks at the hearing, the Minister of Agriculture Abubakar Kyari, stressed that the government can never do anything that will be injurious to the citizens as it subjects crops to a series of tests before consumption.
Earlier in his opening address, the Chairman of the committee, Rep. Bello Ka’oje, said that the committee’s role as Legislators remains to ensure that governance is carried out transparently for the greater good of the nation.
