SHETTIMA UNVEILS CAPITAL MARKET MASTER PLAN AS SEC TARGETS N750TN BY 2036

ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria has unveiled a 10-year plan to grow its capital market to N750 trillion by 2036.

Vice President Kashim Shettima launched the plan, known as the Nigerian Capital Market Master Plan 2.0, at the National Capital Market Conference 2026 in Abuja on Monday.

Shettima said the capital market has become a key tool for national economic policy and for funding Nigeria’s future.

He said the plan, developed by the Securities and Exchange Commission, aims to grow the market from about N250 trillion to N750 trillion in 10 years.

‎The market has grown sharply since May 2023, he said. The Nigerian Exchange All-Share Index rose from about 55,000 points to over 260,000 points. Listed equities grew from about N30 trillion to nearly N160 trillion as of January 2026. Combined equities and bond markets now exceed N217 trillion.

Shettima linked the growth to government reforms, including removal of fuel subsidy, unification of foreign exchange rates, tax reforms, bank recapitalisation and the Investments and Securities Act 2025.

He said the reforms were costly in the short term but have boosted investor confidence.

Under the new plan, he said, the capital market will be at the centre of infrastructure financing. Governments can fund long-term projects with local savings instead of short-term or foreign loans.

‎He said the plan will strengthen the bond market for states, expand retail participation through technology and investor education, and help businesses in agriculture, solid minerals and other sectors to raise capital locally.

Shettima, who chairs the National Economic Council, said he will work with governors to encourage responsible use of the capital market through proper bonds, credible projects and transparency.

He warned against policy reversals that could hurt investor confidence.
