APPMEN INAUGURATES COUNCIL OF PATRONS TO PROMOTE PRIVATE MEDIA IN NIGERIA
ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — The Association of Proprietors of Private Media Establishment of Nigeria has inaugurated its Council of Patrons and National Advisory Council to promote the growth of private media in the country.
The investiture took place on Wednesday in Abuja.
The association said the council will serve as its highest advisory body and guide its work on media development and sustainability.
Former governor of Cross River State, Liyel Imoke, was named chairman of the council and national patron.
The Emir of Katagum, Baba Umar Faruq II, was named national patron, while Joel Sabo Aninge, the Odyong Nyankpa II, was named grand patron.
A National Advisory Council was also constituted to provide policy and intellectual leadership.
The council is chaired by Otive Igbuzor, a development expert and founding executive director of the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development.
National Coordinator of APPMEN, Precious Enebuse, said private media owners in Nigeria have operated without institutional support or national recognition.
“For long, private media proprietors in Nigeria have operated without institutional cover, national recognition or a sustainable structure,” Enebuse said.
He said the new council will give the association royal backing, political guidance and intellectual depth.
He said the council will focus on three goals — building the impact of private media, securing national recognition for the association, and ensuring its sustainability.
Enebuse said the Council of Patrons will serve as the moral and strategic guide of the association, while the advisory council will lead policy, research and engagement with government and development partners.
APPMEN is the umbrella body for private media owners and digital content creators in Nigeria.
