COMPETITION REPORTING STILL NEW IN NIGERIA, FCCPC CALLS FOR CAPACITY BUILDING – BELLO

ABUJA, Nigeria  — The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission says competition reporting is still new in Nigeria.

‎The commission says journalists and regulators need more training in the area.

Executive Vice Chairman of FCCPC, Tunji Bello, said this when he hosted new executives of the Commerce and Industry Correspondents Association of Nigeria in Abuja.

Bello was represented by Executive Commissioner for Operations, Louis Odion.

‎He said competition reporting is new in the country and needs specialised knowledge. He said the request by CICAN for training will be considered.

Bello said the commission recently trained judges through the National Judicial Institute on competition issues.

‎He said judges are also not familiar with the new area, so experts were brought in to train them.

‎He said the media has a key role in educating the public on consumer protection issues.

He thanked commerce journalists for helping to make FCCPC more known to Nigerians.

He said many Nigerians did not know about the commission until recently because of media coverage.

He said the commission funds its operations from internally generated revenue.

‎He thanked CICAN for planning to honour him with an award and said he will attend the event.

Earlier, CICAN Abuja Chairman, Gabriel Kuma, said the association is committed to constructive reporting.

He said a strong regulator needs a strong relationship with the media.

He urged FCCPC to engage more with media and private sector to improve public understanding.

‎He said CICAN is ready to support FCCPC in educating Nigerians on consumer rights and fair competition.
