FCT MINISTER WIKE DECLARES FRIDAY,TODAY WORK FREE TO ENABLE PREPARATION FOR AREA COUNCIL ELECTIONS
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has declared today,Friday, February 20, 2026, a work-free day to facilitate preparations for the Area Council elections.
This move, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aims to enable residents to travel to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval, allowing citizens to make necessary arrangements for the Saturday, February 21, elections .
Movement will be restricted from 8:00 PM on Friday to 6:00 PM on Saturday to ensure a secure voting process. Security agencies have been directed to enforce this restriction and maintain law and order. The FCT Minister, Wike, has urged residents to exercise their democratic rights peacefully and make their voices heard.
The elections will see the election of Chairmen and Councilors for the six area councils.
Wike praised President Tinubu for signing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026, saying it strengthens democratic institutions and ensures free, fair, and transparent electoral processes .
Residents are encouraged to participate in the elections and contribute to building a brighter future for the FCT.
The Minister emphasized the importance of electing quality leaders who will drive development, peace, and prosperity in the territory.
