‎NIGERIA’S REFORMS CAN TRANSFORM AFRICA – OYEDELE

Nigeria’s economic reforms offer lessons for other African countries, Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele has said.

‎Oyedele spoke on Wednesday in Bangkok, Thailand, at the Africa’s Golden Future Forum. He said reforms must be well sequenced and communicated to build public trust.

He said Nigeria removed fuel subsidy before liberalizing foreign exchange to manage cost effects. He listed subsidy removal, forex reform and tax reform as key pillars of the program.

‎Oyedele said Nigeria is aligning trade, fiscal and monetary policies and working on a National Single Window to ease trade. He called for removal of trade barriers and better infrastructure to boost the African Continental Free Trade Area.

He said government is protecting vulnerable citizens with cash transfers to over 10 million households and education support to 1.5 million students. African Development Bank President Sidi Ould Tah said reforms must produce results, noting intra-African trade is only 15 percent and pledging more support for power and infrastructure.
