CALABAR FREE TRADE ZONE PROJECTS 8 BILLION NAIRA REVENUE FROM EIGHT NEW INVESTORS

The Director-General of the Calabar Free Trade Zone, Binta Saed, says the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA) is projected to generate about eight billion naira from eight new investors registered since she assumed office.

‎

‎She disclosed this in an interview with journalists during a media  tour organized by the Nigeria Export Processing Zone Authority, Nepza.

‎

‎Saed noted that some investors have commenced operations, while others are at various stages of development.

‎

‎She expressed confidence in the free trade zone’s potential to contribute further to Nigeria’s economic development under the leadership of the Nepza MD, Dr. Olufemi Ogunyemi.

‎

‎Saed acknowledged several challenges facing the zone, particularly during this year’s rainy season, when landslides threatened some factories.

She also cited concerns over the Ontario project, which she said was on the verge of collapse, potentially putting some host communities at risk. However, she maintained that the zone’s achievements have outweighed these setbacks.

‎

‎Saed also identified the condition of access roads as another major challenge, stressing that transport routes into the zone must meet international standards to attract and support investors.

She therefore called on the Federal Government to address the situation to improve access and enhance the zone’s competitiveness.

‎

‎On taxation, Saed said the Calabar Free Trade Zone had also been affected by Nigeria’s double-taxation concerns.

She explained that the zone generates significant revenue for the government and said efforts were being made to educate relevant government agencies on its importance, with a view to reducing excessive taxation and encroachment on its operations.

‎

‎As she prepares for retirement, Saed reaffirmed her commitment to giving her best until her final day in office.
