DG SAYS TINAPA REMAINS VIABLE DESPITE YEARS OF DISRUPTIONS

The Director-General of Tinapa Business and Leisure Resort, Francis Ekon, says the facility remains viable despite years of disruptions that could have crippled an ordinary business.

‎

‎Ekon made this known in an interview with journalists during a tour organized by the Nigeria Export Processing Zone Authority, Nepza.

‎

‎He described Tinapa as one of the most resilient projects citing several challenges that have hindered its growth. These include the nationwide EndSARS protests, which he said had a particularly severe impact on the resort.

‎

‎Ekon explained that the reasons for establishing Tinapa remain relevant, particularly it’s potential to create jobs, conserve foreign exchange, support the naira, attract foreign investment and provide opportunities that could help reduce the Japa syndrome, which refers to the migration of Nigerians abroad in search of better opportunities.

‎

‎The Director-General also commended the efforts of NEPZA under the leadership of Dr. Olufemi Ogunymi and the Cross River State Governor for supporting efforts to restore the resort.

‎

‎He said the governor had helped address ownership and regulatory issues, strengthen Tinapa’s participation in the free trade zone community, and rebuild relationships with host communities, Calabar residents and the Nigeria Customs Service.

‎

‎Looking ahead, Ekon said Tinapa plans to attract environmentally friendly businesses, including light manufacturing of energy-related vehicles and products.

He added that the resort hopes to develop wellness centres to promote health tourism through partnerships with countries such as India, while expanding its leisure, entertainment, hospitality and retail offerings.
