FEDERAL GOVERNMENT EXPANDS IRRIGATION AND WATER PROJECTS TO BOOST FOOD SECURITY AMID CLIMATE CHALLENGES
The federal government has intensified efforts to enhance food security through expanded irrigation projects and sustainable water management, as climate change continues to threaten Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
Speaking at the 31st National Council on Water Resources and Sanitation (NCWRS) in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Utsev, announced the completion of major irrigation projects and the launch of new schemes in Ondo, Kwara, Benue, Kebbi, Edo, Adamawa, and Oyo States.
These projects, according to the Minister, aim to increase food production and mitigate the effects of climate-induced droughts.
He also revealed that over 40 water supply projects have been completed alongside 44 PEWASH projects, 45 SURWASH projects, and 64 initiatives funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB).
He added that to tackle recurrent flooding, the government has strengthened dam safety assessments and early warning systems through the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA).
