The Commissioner for Insurance and Chief Executive of the National Insurance Commission, Olusegun Omosehin, says insurance is key to infrastructure financing and national development.
Omosehin said this at the 2026 National Insurance Brokers Conference and Exhibition held in Abuja on Wednesday.
He commended the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers for convening the dialogue, saying the theme is timely as Nigeria moves toward a multi-trillion dollar economy.
He said insurance brokers occupy a central position in the insurance ecosystem as trusted risk advisors and advocates for policyholders, generating a significant portion of premium volume.
He said brokers serve as bridge connecting policyholders to underwriters, provide expertise for structuring risks for mega infrastructure projects, and ensure consumer protection through advisory services.
Omosehin said the conference comes at a historic time following the enactment of the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act.
He said NIIRA represents total modernization of the legal and regulatory framework to strengthen balance sheets, enforce market conduct and accelerate insurance penetration.
He said for brokers, the law presents higher standards of accountability and growth opportunities, including enhanced professional standards, recognition of digital insurance channels, and expansion of compulsory insurance classes.
He said infrastructure deficits cannot be bridged without sustainable risk management and local capital participation, adding that the insurance sector must serve as key enabler of national development.
He said NAICOM remains committed to creating enabling environment for product innovation and market expansion, and urged brokers to build alliances across banking, energy, manufacturing and public infrastructure sectors.
