The Nigerian Independent System Operator, NISO, on Wednesday flagged off construction of a new ultra-modern National Control Centre in Osogbo, Osun State.
The centre is expected to strengthen the management and operation of Nigeria’s national grid.
The groundbreaking was performed on behalf of Vice President Kashim Shettima by his Senior Special Assistant on Legal and Compliance Matters, Bashir Maidugu. He said the project shows President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to critical infrastructure under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, said the existing National Control Centre has been in service for about 60 years. He said the new facility is needed to meet demands of the evolving power system.
NISO Board Chairman, Adesegun Akin-Olugbade, said the project is a major milestone in implementing the Electricity Act 2023.
NISO Managing Director, Abdu Bello Mohammed, said the new centre will improve grid visibility, real-time monitoring and response to system events.
He said as the grid grows more complex, modern technology and skilled professionals are needed to operate it effectively.
